Benefits of Membership

The following KOD programs, events and services provide that expertise, as well as support.

Workshops (COFFIN) – The College of Felony and Intrigue (COFFIN) offers two tracks of monthly online workshops, Murder One and Killer Instinct, at an incredibly low price of $15 for members ($30 for non-members). Not only was this educational wing of the chapter one of the first of its kind in the country, it remains today one of the most respected. Our Murder One instructors are experts in such technical fields as law enforcement, criminology, toxicology, fingerprint identification and forensics. Our Killer Instinct instructors cover topics of the craft of writing, publishing and marketing. Click here to go to the workshop listing

Daphne – Named for the woman credited as writing the first romantic suspense novel, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, the Daphne writing contest for both published and non-published authors of romantic suspense and mystery is one of the most prestigious and well-known writing contests in this genre. Though winning or placing in this competition adds a tremendous boost to our entrants’ writing careers, each participant is a winner in her/his own right based on the substantive, helpful feedback received from the judges. It also challenge our member judges to define what they consider good writing and provides an outlet for them to help other writers of romantic suspense and mystery.

There is one contest for published authors and one for unpublished authors. The contest is open to entries January 15 to March 15. Finalists are announced in May or June. Winners and placements are announced at Daphne Awards Ceremony at the KOD Annual Conference.

Annual Conference – Once a year, KOD holds an in-person general meeting where members can meet each other, network and learn from each other’s numerous talents. The Annual Meeting is one of three events of the KOD Annual Conference, which also includes a day-long tour of some of the host city’s facilities and enterprises related to our writing. Past tours have included visits with firefighters, explosive experts, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard facilities. The Daphne Awards Ceremony/Death by Chocolate Party is the final event of the Conference. Though totally separate, the Conference takes place just prior to and during the RWA Annual Conference in the same host city and host hotel. Check back here next March for information about the 2015 Conference.

Lethal Ladies – Imagine having access to a group of supportive writers willing to critique your work no matter the sub-genre. Lethal Ladies (and Gentlemen) is that group. No money is involved. You choose three submissions to critique and, once those are posted, you submit your own work. All critiques are online. That means you can do them in your PJs at 3 a.m. or in your jeans at the coffee shop. You can access feedback on your own submissions at any time.

Feedback, flexibility and above all, support! What more could a writer ask? Members may join this group by contacting Jacquie Biggar.

Invisible Words – This mailing list is used for brainstorming and discussion of any topic pertinent to romantic suspense or mystery as well as general writing. Members may join IW from myRWA.

Book-in-a-Week – is conducted four times a year – March, June, September and December – and runs seven days, from Monday through the following Sunday. The main premise is to get a solid storyline down, a good rough draft of your beginning, middle and ending and an in-depth idea of your main characters, so by the end of the week you’ll have “a novel idea” you can flesh out and build upon. Or maybe you need an extra push to finish that book. Participants set their own goals for the week and write as fast as they can with no editing, no revising and no looking back. Sign-up is found on myRWA.

Q&A with experts – In the same vein as Lethal Ladies, this KOD service provides ready online access to experts in various fields, only rather than receiving critique of one’s work, this program lets members ask questions, sometimes questions they have been unable to find answers for anywhere else.

Clues-N-News – Because we are an Internet-based organization, our life blood is electronic communication. Clues-N-News is one of the major arteries. This loop is available 24/7 for members’ questions, comments, announcements, and member support. Members also have access to the KOD Board and KOD Facebook page through myRWA.

Tread Lightly

Tread lightly...But know that while we are all working together here, the conversation can turn quickly to death, destruction and mayhem. And we are fine with that. We'll even abet you as you work to do the same, to become the best spinner of romantic mysteries and thrillers that you can be. So come on in, the water's warm...as blood.
