Plotting in Three Acts: An interactive workshop for fiction writers by Alicia Rasley
Got a great idea for a story? It's trendy, emotional, and exciting. Or maybe you already have a draft written! It's got sparkling dialogue, deep characters, and vivid descriptions. Now's your chance to bolster the brilliant story you already have with a dramatic and coherent plot structure. In this interactive workshops, we'll learn how to use the magic power of three to organize the plot and give narrative drive to the events. We'll work on:
Dividing the story into three big acts
Using the act structure to chart:
External goals and conflicts
Developing the three acts into ten turning points
Opening the story with a provocative question
Powering up the key scenes with character change
Ending the story with a coherent and satisfying resolution
At every point, Alicia will give you exercises geared to your own story, and invaluable individual feedback.
By the end of this month of plotting, you have a cohesive and dramatic story structure, connected at a deep level with your characters and theme.
Alicia Rasley loves to invent, develop, and fix plots-- her own and those of other writers. She approaches imagination with analytical ability, and is especially intrigued by how fictional structure, that is, plotting, can deliver a more dramatic and insighful story. Along with her writing manuals, she has also written women's fiction, mystery, and non-fiction books. She teaches writing online and at a state university, hoping to instill the love of commas into today's college students.
Tread lightly...But know that while we are all working together here, the conversation can turn quickly to death, destruction and mayhem. And we are fine with that. We'll even abet you as you work to do the same, to become the best spinner of romantic mysteries and thrillers that you can be. So come on in, the water's warm...as blood.
