Daphne Announcement
(With apologies to the late Agatha Christie)
"Oh, look, Sweetums! The Daphne du Maurier Contest is happening again!" Amanda Marble neatly folded the pages of the magazine and waved the notice under her cat's nose.
"Mrwp?" replied the astute cat, cocking her head at her mistress.
"Surely you remember the contest? Contestants submit the first fifteen pages of their unpublished story, and the entries are read by four experienced and well-trained judges, who will provide detailed comments. And if the entries are very, very good, the judges will pass them on to some amazing final judges in the publishing industry. Just look at these names, and all the splendid categories one can enter!"
Category (Series): Patti Steele-Perkins, Steele-Perkins Literary Agency; Allison Lyons, Harlequin Intrigue
Historical: Kelly Harms, Jane Rotrosen Agency; Chris Keeslar, Dorchester Publishing
Inspirational: Karen Solem, Spencerhill Associates; Melissa Endlich, Steeple Hill Books
Mainstream: Paige Wheeler, Folio Literary Management; Linda McFall, MIRA Books
Paranormal: Kristin Nelson, Nelson Literary Agency; Megan McKeever, Pocket Books
Single Title: Kimberly Whalen, Trident Media Group; Celia Johnson, Grand Central Publishing
As her owner read out the list, Sweetums looked bored and washed her paw.
Miss Marble rubbed behind Sweetums' ears. "Pay attention, you silly cat. The winner receives the coveted Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense. Doesn't that sound wonderful?"
Sweetums stood up and stretched, then jumped onto Miss Marble's lap and sat on the magazine. Miss Marble tugged it out from under her pet. "And published authors can enter as well! They have their own contest. Isn't that grand?"
Sweetums purred.
"I'm so glad you agree. And all you have to do is read the rules, fill out an entry form and send your entry to the coordinators listed on the website. See? You can find it all right here, at www.rwamysterysuspense.org" (Miss Marble, in her dotage, had forgotten that her cat was not computer-literate.) When Sweetums dozed off, Miss Marble said, "All right, perhaps you don't care, but I know a lot of writers are going to be very excited to hear about this. But they had better hurry! All entries must be received by March 15th!"
If you're not a cat, please check out the information on the Kiss of Death website . Questions? Contact contest coordinators through the email links on the site. If you'd be interested in judging, please contact me directly.
We look forward to your entries!
